    About Beats Unbound

You don’t just listen to music. You live with it.

There are songs you like, and then there are songs that somehow become part of your life.

You hear one years later and you’re back somewhere you haven’t thought about in a long time. A particular summer. A person. A room. Sometimes you don’t even remember why the song mattered to you in the first place. You just know that it still does.

Beats Unbound started from that fascination with music and everything that surrounds it.

We write about songs and the people who make them, but also about the stories, ideas and emotions that grow around music. Why a particular song means something to millions of people. How music becomes tied to a place, a generation or a political moment. What happens when technology changes the way music is made. And why some songs seem to survive almost everything.

You’ll find different kinds of stories here.

Why It Moves You looks at the personal side of listening — memory, emotion, nostalgia, heartbreak, comfort, concentration and the strange associations we build with music over time.

Songs & Meaning gets closer to individual songs: their lyrics, stories, origins and the different ways they can be understood. Sometimes the meaning is obvious. Sometimes it takes a little digging.

Music, Power & Narrative looks at what happens when music meets the wider world — politics, culture, identity, fame, influence, the music business and the stories societies create around artists and their work.

Sound & Evolution is about change. New technologies, instruments, genres, production techniques and new ways of making and hearing music. From recording and streaming to AI, we look at how the sound around us keeps evolving.

And Our Picks is where we share things we genuinely think music lovers might find useful or worth discovering, from books and listening gear to apps and other finds.

We’re not trying to tell you what the “best” music is. There are plenty of places already doing that.

We’re more interested in the reasons we keep coming back to certain songs.

Sometimes there’s a fascinating story behind them. Sometimes there’s a cultural moment that changed everything. Sometimes a song simply found us at the right time.

    That’s usually where we start.
